            John Airey

 

John Airey was born between 1786 and 1791 in Yorkshire, England. He worked as a corn miller in Bainbrige, a small village in the Wensleydale valley, Yorkshire. John married Rose. They had   nine children:

            Thomas Wilson

 

Thomas Wilson was born in 1808 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England, a son of Jane. Jane was born in 1789 in Broughton, Yorkshire, England. She was an innkeeper at High Green, Great Ayton in 1861.

 

Thomas Wilson married Elizabeth King. Thomas Wilson was a grocer in 1840 and 1851 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire. By 1861 he was working as an innkeeper, helping to manage his mother's inn at High Green, Great Ayton.

Elizabeth King was born in 1807 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England. She married Thomas Wilson about 1823 - 1833. They had eight children:

Charles Airey

 

Charles Airey was born in 1825 in Bainbridge, Wensleydale, Yorkshire, England, the fourth child of John and Rose Airey.

 

At age 17, Charles was living with Ann Robinson in the township of East Milton. He was working as a miller, the same occupation as his father.

 

Charles married Emma Wilson on July 10, 1856. Charles was a widower and working as a miller in Ayton at the time of his marriage to Emma. He was a grocer and master draper by 1861 according to his son Albert's birth record and census. The family was living at Hall Farm at Great Ayton, York in 1861, at Green Tree Inn at Great Ayton in 1871, and at 12 Dive Street, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, in 1881.

 

Charles immigrated with his wife and two children to Canada by the S.S. Polynesian of the Allan Line Steamship Co., departing Liverpool, England on March 11, 1886.

Emma Wilson

 

Emma Wilson was born on January 15, 1840, in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England, the fifth child

of Thomas Wilson and Elizabeth King.

 

Emma married Charles Airey on July 10, 1856 in the Parish Church of Ayton of Ayton in Cleveland, Yorkshire. They had 2 children:

 

Mary Jane Wilson Airey                  b. November 17, 1859 at Great Ayton, York

Albert Joseph Airey                          b. May 3, 1862 at Great Ayton, York

 

Mary Jane Airey was a dressmaker at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire at age 21.

 

The family (Charles, Emma, Mary and Albert) immigrated to Canada by ship S.S. Polynesia in 1886.

 

Mary Jane Wilson Airey married William Bailey on November 17, 1886 in St. Thomas, Ontario. They had five sons.

William Smith

 

William Smith was born February 3, 1831 in Westbury, Wiltshire, the second child of Natharuel Smith and Joanna Dowding. William was baptized April 22, 1832 at the Old Meeting Independent Church, Westbury. William worked as a labourer at the Westbury Ironworks. He was illiterate.

 

William married Jane Wallen on October 11, 1853. They lived on How Street, Westbury in 1861, and on Bratten Road in 1871 at The Hollow, in Westbury.

 

 Note: A crossed out birth record shows William's birth on July 11, 1831 and baptized on the same date as the following record.

Jane Wallen

 

Jane Wallen was born in 1834 in Westbury, Wiltshire, a daughter of James Wallen. Jane married William Smith on October 11, 1853 in Westbury, Wiltshire. Jane was illiterate. They had seven children:

Albert Airey

 

Albert was born on May 3, 1861 in Great Ayton, Yorkshire, England, the second child of Charles Airey and Emma Wilson.

 

Albert grew up in Great Ayton and was working as a joiner and living with his parents at age 19 at Middlesbrough, Yorkshire in 1881.  He immigrated to Canada in 1886.

 

Albert was working as a mechanic at St. Thomas, Elgin county, Ontario prior to his marriage. St. Thomas is a city of 28,000 about 16 miles south of London, Ontario. Albert Airey married Ellen Annie Smith on May 5, 1888. They arrived in Vancouver by freight train in 1889.

 

Albert worked as a carpenter and helped build Christ Church Cathedral, where his son was the first boy to be christened.

 

Albert built his house in about 1900 at 555 Thurlow Street, Vancouver, B. C., which was his last residence. Albert was originally a Quaker, and Ellen Annie was a Methodist. As there was no other church, the family became Anglican.

 

In 1902 Albert Airey had a carpenter shop on the north east corner of Hastings Street and Granville Street. The wooden building had a white front with a large sign which read 'A. Airey,

Carpenter & Contractor, Jobbing Promptly Attended.'

 

Albert died in hospital September 2, 1942 at Vancouver, B. C. and was buried in the Ocean View Burial Park.

Ellen Annie Smith

 

Ellen Annie Smith was born on February 6, 1865 in Westbury, Wiltshire, the fifth child of William Smith and Jane Wallen.

 

Ellen was living in Toronto, Ontario prior to her marriage. Ellen married Albert Airey on May 5, 1888 in St. Thomas, Ontario. They had three children:

 

Francis Joseph Airey                                    b. February 5, 1889 at Vancouver, B. C.

Lillian Emma Airey                                      b. December 27, 1890 at Vancouver, B. C.   

Rose Winnifred Airey                                   b. August 21, 1898 at Vancouver, B. C.

 

Ellen Annie Smith died September 9, 1945 at her residence 555 Thurlow Street, Vancouver, B. C. aged 80 years. She was buried at Ocean View Burial Park.

 

Lillian Emma Airey married Arthur P. Brown on August 4, 1915 at Church Christ Cathedral, Vancouver, B. C. They had one child:

 

John Lyle (Jack) Brown                   b. October 29, 1926

d. April 3, 1997 at Seattle, Washington

 

Jack Brown served with the American Armed Forces.

 

Lillian Emma Airey died in Seattle on April 7, 1991.

 

 Rose Winnifred Airey did not marry. She died January 1, 1986 at Vancouver, B. C.
