The family lived next door to Thomas Shepherd, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. Josiah Gregory would marry Elizabeth Shepherd, daughter of John Shepherd. John Shepherd is likely related to Thomas Shepherd, which might have resulted in Josiah meeting Elizabeth.

            John Shepherd

They had two daughters:

Sarah Tilyer Shepherd                     baptized July 13, 1800 at Hillingdon

Josiah was a hay salesman living at Colham Green in 1841 with his wife and his first baby son. Colham Green is a district of Hillingdon. He had two male servants helping at the farm, Joseph Bishop, age 25, and James Goft, age 18. By 1851 he was farming 100 acres at Merrimans farm at Goulds Green. Goulds Green is a sub-district of Colham Green. In 1861 he was farming 120 acres with 7 labourers. By 1871 he was farming 90 acres and employing 5 men.

Josiah was a wealthy man. He operated a London horse carriage business named Josiah Gregory and Son. Josiah had a butcher shop and cottage with a garden situated at Yiewsley, a village southwest of Hillingdon. He owned two cottages at Hillingdon Heath, and a freehold estate at Little London. Hillingdon Heath is a district of Hillingdon and Little London is a sub-districts of Colham Green. Josiah invested in the stock market, especially in railroad shares.

Josiah Gregory died on November 20, 1882 at Merrimans Farm, Goulds Green, Hillingdon, Middlesex, England at the age of 72 years. He was buried on November 27, 1882 at gravespace BA28 Hillingdon Cemetery, Hillingdon Hill, Hillingdon, Middlesex.

Josiah's will gives the horse carriage business to John Gregory, so he likely helped his father operate the business. Part of the Little London estate was given to John and the remainder given to Joseph. The house at Merrimans was given to Josiah's wife Elizabeth for her use during her lifetime, then passed to John. Josiah junior received the butcher shop and cottage at Yiewsley. Sara got the two cottages at Hillingdon Heath, and a Cumberland cottage located next to the Merrimans house. The value of Josiah's estate was 24,098 pounds, 3 shillings, which was a very large sum of money at that time.

The family lived at Merryman Farm, in Little London, in Colham Green district at Hillingdon.

By 1871 Joseph left his father's farm and was farming at Colham Green, Hillingdon. The farm was 170 acres and he employed 6 men and 2 boys according to the 1881 census. The farm produce cherries, hay, some grain, and had a few cows. (Note: Joe Gregory's family history says the farm was about 60 acres.)

Joseph married Ernestine Grace Harris on June 5, 1878. Joseph and Ernestine had six children between 1879 and 1888. Joseph and Ernestine were apparently very puritanical and brought up their family with excessive rigidity. This attitude was particularly hard on the two daughters, Mabel and Mary, who were never given approval to associate with young men. One time a young man had the temerity to walk one of the sisters to her home from church. This apparently innocuous act resulted in a huge furor so that she was never able to see the young man again and would never dare to allow such a thing to happen again. This repressive behavior was probably the reason that neither Mary nor Mabel ever got married.

The family lived at Avenue Lodge, Harlington Road, Goulds Green, Hillingdon by 1891.

Joseph died on March 4, 1924 at Goulds Green, Hillingdon. He was buried on March 11 at gravespace N28 u/c, Hillingdon Cemetery, Hillingdon Hill, Hillingdon, Middlesex. Probate was granted on May 15, 1924. His estate was valued at 45,013 pounds, 8 shillings.

Avenue Lodge is now called Middlesex Lodge. Kathleen C & Roy D Barwick now live there.
