Edward (Ted) Stanley Gregory

Edward (Ted) was born on September 11, 1922 at a ranch house 9 miles east Irricana, Alberta, the third surviving child of Edward Joseph Gregory and Ellen Rhoda Fowler. His family moved one year after his birth to 1720 - 9A Street, Calgary, Alberta. Ted attended Earl Grey Public School, Calgary. He broke his left arm jumping over a fence when in grade 3. The arm didn't heal properly so he could never again straighten it. Ted used to like to play with matches and start little fires. One day his little fire got out of hand and the lawn caught fire and started to burn the neighbour's fence. His mother put it out in time with a broom but Ted got a rarely given spanking for that. Senator Lougheed lived across the street from them. Peter Lougheed, later premier of Alberta, was then a kid the children played with.

Ted spent several summers at the Irricana ranch as a child. He attended grade 9 at Mount Royal Junior High School in Calgary. At age 13, in June 1937 the family moved to 1367 - West 47 Avenue, Vancouver, B.C., where Ted attended Magee High School.

Ted studied Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia and graduated in 1945.  Ted met Fran during this last year at UBC.

Ted's first job was with B.C. Electric at 425 Canel Street. His salary was $150/month, but he got a retroactive pay increase to $210/month a year after he started work.

He married Frances (Fran) Margaret Airey at the St. Augustine Church in Marpole, Vancouver on July 26, 1947. Ted rented a rent-controlled apartment two months before the marriage by agreeing to buy the furniture. Ted and Fran moved in immediately after the marriage at 31, 18 Alberta Street. The small apartment cost $23.50/month and the bathroom was shared with two other suites.

They bought a house for $9000 at 3745 Puget Drive at Point Grey. Fran is fond of saying that the house had 13 steps at the back and 39 steps at the front. In 1954 they moved to 7318 Maple Street in the South Arbutus area.

Ted moved to Powell River, B. C. to manage the B.C. Hydro district office on June 1, 1955. He would return to Vancouver on weekends to be with his family. Fran with the two new born twins, Don and Ken, flew by DC-3 plane on November 11, 1955 to move to Powell River. Her sister Shirley Airey went with her to help. Due to poor weather, the plane landed at Comox on Vancouver Island. Several hours later they flew under the low clouds across Georgia Strait to the Powell River airport. Ted was to drive to Powell River with Ross and Brian, but was delayed because the ferries were not operating due to the bad weather.

The family lived in a small rented house at Kamloops Street and Marine Drive while a new home was under construction. The family moved into the new house at 3290 Malaspina Avenue, Powell River in May, 1956. The family was active in water skiing and boating in the Powell River area.

Ted accepted a promotion to Distribution Manager, Vancouver area, and moved to 6768 Ash Street, Vancouver on November 1, 1973. He had a small house on Redroofs Road, Sechelt, over looking Georgia Strait constructed during the summer of 1982. They used the house extensively to escape the noise of the city. Ted and Fran moved to 5 - 1001 Northlands Drive, North Vancouver in June 1, 1992.

Ted and Fran were very active with square dancing, playing bridge and traveling until Fran passed away in November 2008.

Ted had a stroke and heart attack on December 4, 2010 at his home in North Vancouver and was taken to Lions Gate Hospital. He passed away peacefully on December 5, 2010. A memorial service for Ted Gregory was held at Mount Seymour United Church, North Vancouver on December 17, 2010.
