Ellen Rhoda Fowler
Ellen was
born on December 31, 1894, at Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario, the fifth child
of William Grosert
Fowler and Ellen Maria
Hiscocks. Ellen was born in a seven bedroom house near the train
station on Clinton
Street.
Teeswater
was predominantly a Scotch Presbyterian town near Lake
Huron. She grew up in Teeswater with two brothers and four sisters.
The daughters were all very musical and they sang together at every opportunity.
Ellen was the only one of the girls to graduate from high
school.
She moved
to Calgary, Alberta in 1912 to attend Normal School, which
is a teachers' training college. When visiting her brothers Bert and Grosert in
Irricana, she met Edward Joseph
Gregory who was helping his brother Arthur Josiah
Gregory at his Irricana store, and started dating him while
going to school. After graduating from the college she got a job teaching in a
one room school near Irricana and boarded at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Miner. She
married Edward Gregory on November 22, 1913 at her parent's residence at
Clinton Street,
Teeswater, Ontario.
Edward and
Ellen had five children:

b. October 6, 1918 at Calgary, Alberta

b. May 12, 1926 at Calgary, Alberta
Ellen lived
with Edward at the Nanton ranch, and at the Irricana ranch until 1924 when they
moved to Calgary. Before she had children she had her
own saddle horse at Nanton called "Gypsy" and rode frequently. Her sister Madge
visited her at the ranch at Nanton and eventually married Edward's brother
Arthur. Both families lived at the ranch at Irricana for a while. They moved into a house at 1367 - West
47 Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. in June 1937. Ellen enjoyed attending the
United
Church services. She lived
at Trinity Lodge seniors home at Vancouver from 1982 to 1989 and then at South
Granville Park Lodge nursing home at 1645 West 14 Avenue, Vancouver until her
death.
Ellen
Gregory died on June 13, 1995 in Vancouver at the age of 100 years. The funeral
was on June 19, 1995 and she was buried at the Forest Lawn
Cemetery, Burnaby, B. C.
