Ellen Rhoda Fowler

Ellen was born on December 31, 1894, at Teeswater, Bruce County, Ontario, the fifth child of William Grosert Fowler and Ellen Maria Hiscocks. Ellen was born in a seven bedroom house near the train station on Clinton Street.

Teeswater was predominantly a Scotch Presbyterian town near Lake Huron. She grew up in Teeswater with two brothers and four sisters. The daughters were all very musical and they sang together at every opportunity. Ellen was the only one of the girls to graduate from high school.

She moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1912 to attend Normal School, which is a teachers' training college. When visiting her brothers Bert and Grosert in Irricana, she met Edward Joseph Gregory who was helping his brother Arthur Josiah Gregory at his Irricana store, and started dating him while going to school. After graduating from the college she got a job teaching in a one room school near Irricana and boarded at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Miner. She married Edward Gregory on November 22, 1913 at her parent's residence at Clinton Street, Teeswater, Ontario.

Edward and Ellen had five children:

            Marjurie Gregory                             b. 1914                        d. at age 3 weeks

Rhoda Ernestine Gregory                b. November 4, 1916 at Calgary, Alberta

Alfred Joseph (Joe) Gregory            b. October 6, 1918 at Calgary, Alberta

Edward Stanley Gregory                 b. September 11, 1922 at Irricana, Alberta

Kenneth Fowler Gregory                 b. May 12, 1926 at Calgary, Alberta

Ellen lived with Edward at the Nanton ranch, and at the Irricana ranch until 1924 when they moved to Calgary. Before she had children she had her own saddle horse at Nanton called "Gypsy" and rode frequently. Her sister Madge visited her at the ranch at Nanton and eventually married Edward's brother Arthur. Both families lived at the ranch at Irricana for a while.  They moved into a house at 1367 - West 47 Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. in June 1937. Ellen enjoyed attending the United Church services. She lived at Trinity Lodge seniors home at Vancouver from 1982 to 1989 and then at South Granville Park Lodge nursing home at 1645 West 14 Avenue, Vancouver until her death.

Ellen Gregory died on June 13, 1995 in Vancouver at the age of 100 years. The funeral was on June 19, 1995 and she was buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby, B. C.
